Fully Covariant Van Dam - Veltman - Zakharov Discontinuity , and Absence Thereof

چکیده
In both old and recent literature, it has been argued that the celebrated van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov (vDVZ) discontinuity of massive gravity is an artifact due to linearization of the true equations of motion. In this letter, we investigate that claim. First, we exhibit an explicit –albeit somewhat arbitrary– fully covariant set of equations of motion that, upon linearization, reduce to the standard Pauli-Fierz equations. We show that the vDVZ dis-continuity still persists in that non-linear, covariant theory. Then, we restrict our attention to a particular system that consistently incorporates massive gravity: the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) model. DGP is fully covariant and does not share the arbitrariness and imperfections of our previous covari-antization, and its linearization exhibits a vDVZ discontinuity. Nevertheless, we explicitly show that the discontinuity does disappear in the fully covariant theory, and we explain the reason for this phenomenon.

No Van Dam - Veltman - Zakharov Discontinuity in Ads Space
We prove that the van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov discontinuity arising in the massless limit of massive gravity theories is peculiar to Minkowski space and it is not present in Anti De Sitter space, where the massless limit is smooth. More generally, the massless limit is smooth whenever the square of the graviton mass vanishes faster than the cosmological constant.
متن کاملNo Van Dam - Veltman - Zakharov Discontinuity for Supergravity in Ads Space
Adding explicit mass terms for the spin 2 and spin 3/2 field of N = 1 anti-de Sitter supergravity, the limit M → 0 for these mass terms is smooth: there is no van DamVeltman-Zakharov mass discontinuity in the propagators when the cosmological constant is non-vanishing.
متن کاملQuantum M 2 → 2 Λ / 3 discontinuity for massive gravity with a Λ term
In a previous paper we showed that the absence of the van Dam-Veltman-Zakharov discontinuity as M 2 → 0 for massive spin-2 with a Λ term is an artifact of the tree approximation, and that the discontinuity reappears at one loop, as a result of going from five degrees of freedom to two. In this paper we show that a similar classical continuity but quantum discontinuity arises in the " partially ...
متن کاملCosmic Strings in a Braneworld Theory with Metastable Gravitons
If the graviton possesses an arbitrarily small (but nonvanishing) mass, perturbation theory implies that cosmic strings have a nonzero Newtonian potential. Nevertheless in Einstein gravity, where the graviton is strictly massless, the Newtonian potential of a cosmic string vanishes. This discrepancy is an example of the van Dam–Veltman–Zakharov (VDVZ) discontinuity. We present a solution for th...

Cosmologically motivated theories that explain small acceleration rate of the Universe via modification of gravity at very large, horizon or super-horizon distances, can be tested by precision gravitational measurements at much shorter scales, such as the Earth-Moon distance. Contrary to the naive expectation the predicted corrections to the Einsteinian metric near gravitating sources are so si...
